Review: Sweet Jesus
Location: 106 John St, Toronto, ON M5H 1X9 (various other locations)
Price: ~$6 for specialty cone (varies by size of cone/cup) - Menu
Website: Sweet Jesus
Quick Background:
Sweet Jesus is a Toronto based ice cream chain. As their website states, the store was created with a goal in mind, which was: "to combine conceptual thinking with high-quality ingredients and products, in an effort to make something that tastes and looks, unlike anything you’ve ever seen and had before." In a gist, Sweet Jesus operates in the confectionary goods industry, specifically known for their soft serve specialty ice cream.
The company has taken off as the latest soft serve trend in Toronto and has made quite a buzz over social media. Dubbed, "the latest hype" according to many Torontonians.
Note: recently in the news, the company has been under fire for their name. Since then, the company has released a small statement on their homepage (as copied from their website and seen below).
"Our name was created from the popular phrase that people use as an expression of enjoyment, surprise or disbelief. Our aim is not to offer commentary on anyone’s religion or belief systems, Our own organization is made up of amazing people that represent a wide range of cultural and religious beliefs."
Review:
I went to two separate locations at two different periods of time. The first visit was at the St. John's location (the only location at the time), which was a tiny little store with a handful of tables to sit and enjoy your dessert. However, since my first visit, the ice cream chain has expanded at a rapid rate. As a result, I was able to try the dessert again at a different location (Eaton Centre). Point being, with the expansion, the chain did a successful job maintaining some sort of consistency across their products. However, when I ended up getting the "birthday cake" flavour ice cream I received a candle on the cone version, but the cup version didn't get that "special treatment". Other than that, the soft serves and the "s'mores hot chocolate" drink were delicious and the desserts and beverages themselves are all eye-catching and "for the 'gram".

VERDICT: Definitely not your everyday dessert food. It's a bit on the pricier side for a cone. Is it worth the hype? I probably wouldn't line up for it, but if you're looking for something to show off to your instagram followers, this is it. It tastes good and it looks nice. Doesn't hurt to give it a try!
