Review: Basil Box
Location: 105 The Pond Rd unit 30, North York, ON M3J 0K9
Price: ~$11 - Menu
Website: Basil Box
Background:
When you think of a street market, you picture flavourful local dished prepared with the freshest ingredients.
Inspired by the sights, smells and sounds of the busy streets of Thailand and Vietnam, Basil Box hopes to bring such experiences here. Starting with their food. Traditionally known to be greasy, Basil Box is a restaurant that takes Asian fast food cuisine to the next level. This is where you have the option to mix and match a variety of different fresh, authentic and healthy ingredients to build your own unique “box”.
Quick Review:
Walking into this store, the atmosphere is bright and welcoming. Of the times I’ve been to this location, there wasn’t much of a queue. But don’t let this deter you, the staff are super friendly and greet you as soon as you walk in the door.
Creating a box means starting off with a base (typically rice or noodles), adding vegetables and/or protein and then adding toppings (such as sauces). For example, I got rice as my base, beef as my protein and added 2-3 veggies like sweet potato and edamame. To top it all off, I got a mixture of two sauces (a sweet chili lime and sizzlin' peanut), crushed peanuts, roasted sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds.
For drinks, I asked my server what drink they recommended and they suggested the thai iced tea. Visually, this drink looks appealing, especially before and while stirring it up. Taste wise? Definitely an acquired taste as it's quite strong, but I enjoyed it!

VERDICT: I wouldn't call myself a healthy eater, but this place actually makes me want to start eating healthy. It's probably one of my top favourite "healthy" fast-food joints! Go for it if you want fresh tasting healthy food on the go!
