Sugar Marmalade is a fusion dessert restaurant established in 2010. It is inspired by the classical tastes of Hong Kong. They aim to bring the taste of Hong Kong “closer” to you and to turn your experience into something magical. The restaurant is known to take the essence of traditional desserts and mix it with their own creative twists.

Review:

At first glance, this place has a home-y atmosphere. It is a rather small dessert place (but given the location, it’s pretty much expected). At Sugar Marmalade, you are seated and given a menu with an ordering sheet. Once you are done writing down your order, there is a service button on the table that calls the waitress over. I ordered the Taiwanese Shaved Ice in Mango flavour. This dessert is often really popular in the summer, but it was still great when I had it in the colder months. If you love ice cream, this is an interesting twist and the dish for you. The bottom layer of the dessert is shaved ice. Typically and now a days, this is done by a machine that shaves layers of ice off a mound of ice. Topped on the bowl of shaved ice is a scoop of vanilla ice cream sprinkled with fresh slices of mango and aloe jelly. On the side, you are given a small glass of evaporated milk to pour on top of the dessert.

For $7.99, the portion is generous. I personally couldn’t finish it myself and got it as a dessert to share. On a hot day, this dessert hits the spot and beats regular ice cream. It tastes light (the shaved ice part) but also nails the creaminess (with the scoop of ice cream and milk). This dessert comes in many other flavours as well including matcha (green tea) and red bean, strawberry, and chocolate.

Things to note: this place does not take debit, and only cash or credit.

Verdict: You definitely need to try this. Shake things up in your life; forget boring old ice cream scoops.
